Sonya works tirelessly to provide around-the-clock care for her husband Mervyn, who has Alzheimer’s disease.
Throughout the pandemic, Sonya has created thoughtful opportunities for Mervyn to engage with others, despite the extra challenges that physical distancing brings. One of the ways she connects Mervyn with others is by helping him attend Circle of Care’s Adult Day Program virtually on a regular basis, since attending in-person has not been possible.
While Sonya takes on an enormous responsibility, she is incredibly determined – providing daily routines, engaging him in household tasks, going for walks, helping to keep him informed by reading the news, and cooking nutritious meals. She even takes time to care for herself by attending support groups and connecting with her close-knit family.
Sonya was a teacher for more than 30 years, and expresses her wish to help others in their time of need. Sonya does all this with what she says is so important to have – a sense of humor. The acceptance, gratitude and appreciation for life, and positive mindset she shares regularly is truly an inspiration.
Sonya joined the Caregiver Club in January 2021, and we’re pleased to recognize her as our first Courageous Caregiver nominee!
